They find some way to keep you after your four years

My Alaska-bound Army friend called me early this morning, seeking advice. Should he remain in inactive duty with the Army, meaning they could call him up for duty at any time in the next four years, or join the National Guard for a year and a half, giving up one weekend a month but being guaranteed he won’t be sent overseas?

I didn’t want to tell him to do one or the other. But when he asked me outright, I said I would probably do the National Guard. He had until 8 a.m. this morning (Washington time) to decide, so I wonder which way he went.
